UAE Teaching Visa & Education Professional Licence 2026
The UAE combines a standard Gulf employer-sponsorship residence visa with a mandatory national teacher licensing system (TLS). Both are required. Both are employer-initiated. This guide covers every step.
UAE teaching authorisation: two parallel processes
Teaching legally in the UAE requires two separate but parallel processes. The residence visa process makes you a legal resident and employee of the UAE. The Education Professional Licence (TLS) makes you a legally authorised teacher in a UAE school. You cannot be employed as a teacher without both.
Both are initiated by your employer. Your role is to provide correct, attested documents promptly and complete the TLS assessments. The faster you respond to document requests, the faster both processes move. Schools that have experience with international teacher recruitment will guide you clearly through each step.
🏞 Track 1: Residence visa
Allows you to live and work in the UAE legally. Entry permit → medical → Emirates ID → residence visa stamp. 6–10 weeks. Employer submits all UAE-side applications. You provide attested documents and undergo medical examination.
🏫 Track 2: TLS Education Professional Licence
Authorises you to teach in UAE schools specifically. Document submission → pedagogy assessment → subject assessment (if applicable) → licence issued. 6–12 weeks. Employer submits documents; you complete assessments online.
Step-by-step: the UAE residence visa process
Secure job offer and prepare attested documents
All UAE teaching positions are secured before arrival. Begin document attestation immediately upon accepting an offer — the multi-stage process (home country → UAE embassy → MOFA → KHDA/ADEK) takes 6–10 weeks. Your employer will provide a specific document checklist. Start with your degree and police clearance certificate, as these have the longest lead times.
Employer obtains Entry Permit from GDRFA
Your sponsoring school applies for an Entry Permit (e-Visa) through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA). This is the authorisation that allows you to enter the UAE as an employment visa holder. Processing: 1–2 weeks typically. Your employer handles this entirely; you receive the permit number to present on arrival.
Travel to UAE and complete medical examination
Enter the UAE on the entry permit. Immediately complete the mandatory medical examination at an approved UAE health centre. Tests include HIV, tuberculosis, and general health assessment. Biometrics registered. Apply for Emirates ID — your official UAE residency identification card, required for banking, driving, and government services.
Residence visa stamped in passport
Your school submits your passport to GDRFA for residence visa stamping. This officially grants legal residency tied to your employment contract. Once stamped, you have full UAE residency rights: banking, driving licence, family sponsorship, re-entry after international travel. The visa is tied to your employer; changing jobs requires a formal transfer process.

Step-by-step: the TLS Education Professional Licence
School submits your file to TLS portal
Your employer uploads your attested documents to the Ministry of Education’s TLS system. In Dubai, KHDA is the local authority; in Abu Dhabi, ADEK; in Sharjah, SPEA. Required documents: attested degree + transcripts · TEFL/teaching certificate · passport and visa copy · Emirates ID · professional references · background clearance letters. Your school’s HR department coordinates the submission.
Complete the pedagogy assessment online
You are notified when to complete the pedagogy assessment via the TLS portal. The test covers: formative and summative assessment · differentiated instruction · inclusive education · safeguarding · curriculum planning and delivery. Available online; timed. Up to 3 attempts permitted with defined retake windows. Prepare using the official MoE Teacher and Education Leadership Standards — not unofficial question banks.
Complete the subject assessment (secondary teachers)
English teachers in secondary positions complete a subject-specific assessment covering EFL/TESOL theory, linguistic analysis, and pedagogical application. Primary English teachers may have a combined or reduced assessment. Online, typically 60–90 minutes. The subject assessment is separate from pedagogy and must be passed independently.
Licence issued; valid 3 years
Assuming all assessments passed and documents verified, the Education Professional Licence is issued as a PDF document. Valid for 3 years. Renewed at expiry with evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The licence is portable — if you move to a different UAE school, your licence moves with you. You start a new attestation process at the new school, but the TLS licence itself remains valid.
Transitional licence: Many schools issue a transitional licence allowing you to begin teaching while completing your TLS assessments. The transitional period varies by school and emirate. Do not assume this is available — confirm your school’s policy explicitly before accepting an offer. Never arrive expecting to begin work without discussing this transition arrangement first.
Document attestation checklist
| Document | Attestation route | Lead time |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor’s degree certificate | University verification → home MOFA/apostille → UAE embassy → UAE MOFA → KHDA/ADEK | 4–8 weeks |
| University transcripts | Same route as degree certificate | 4–8 weeks |
| TEFL/teaching certificate | Issuing body verification → home MOFA/apostille → UAE embassy | 2–4 weeks |
| Criminal background check | National police authority → apostille → UAE embassy (for countries requiring it) | 4–8 weeks |
| Professional references | On official letterhead; dated within 12 months | 1–2 weeks |
| Medical fitness | Completed in UAE on arrival at approved centre | 1–3 days |
Start attestation early. The degree attestation chain is the longest single process in UAE teacher preparation. Begin as soon as you seriously consider applying — before you have a confirmed offer if possible. Attestation errors are the most common cause of delayed start dates.
The Emirates ID
The Emirates ID (EID) is your official UAE identification document and is required for almost all practical aspects of life in the UAE: opening a bank account, registering a mobile SIM, obtaining a driving licence, accessing government services, and re-entering the UAE after international travel. It is applied for as part of the residence visa process — your employer initiates the application; you provide biometrics at an approved Emirates ID registration centre. Processing takes 1–2 weeks after biometrics submission.
The Emirates ID card contains your residency details, passport number, and a chip with your biometric data. It is the document you present at UAE border control on re-entry after travelling abroad. Carry it at all times in the UAE — it is technically required for identification in all official interactions.
Visa & licensing FAQ
Can I change employers in the UAE?
Yes, but it requires a formal process. Your residence visa is tied to your sponsoring employer. Changing schools requires a formal release (NOC) from your current employer plus a new residence visa sponsored by your new employer. Your TLS Education Professional Licence is not employer-specific and moves with you. KHDA maintains a deregistration list for teachers who leave Dubai schools without completing proper notice procedures — listed teachers cannot be rehired at Dubai private schools. Completing your notice period and exit survey is important.
How long does the whole process take?
From “I have a signed offer” to “I’m legally teaching in the UAE with TLS licence in hand”: typically 3–4 months. Attestation chain: 6–10 weeks. Employer visa application: 2–4 weeks. Travel and medical: 1–2 weeks. TLS assessment process: 4–8 weeks (if assessments passed first attempt). Running the attestation process in parallel with other steps, and starting it early, is the most effective way to compress the timeline.
Is the UAE Golden Visa relevant for teachers?
Potentially, for highly experienced or credentialed teachers. The UAE’s 10-year Golden Visa is available to “specialised talents” in certain professional categories, including education. Distinguished teachers with advanced qualifications, significant experience, or recognised specialisations may qualify. The Golden Visa provides long-term residency independent of employer sponsorship — a significant advantage for teachers planning extended UAE careers. Eligibility criteria and applications are managed through the GDRFA or Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA).
