Teach English in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah & the Northern Emirates

Abu Dhabi: the UAE capital, lower costs than Dubai, world-class institutions, and the Gulf’s largest public school programme. Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah: the practical and scenic alternatives for teachers who want Gulf earnings at lower cost.

UAE Capital

Why Abu Dhabi is an underrated TEFL destination

Abu Dhabi tends to live in Dubai’s shadow in the TEFL world’s imagination — a mistake that experienced Gulf teachers frequently point out. The UAE capital offers comparable salaries to Dubai across most employer tiers, a lower cost of living (~$400/month less than Dubai), and a more authentic Gulf character that many teachers find more interesting to live in over the long term.

Abu Dhabi’s cultural offer is world-class: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (one of the world’s largest and most beautiful mosques), the Louvre Abu Dhabi, New York University Abu Dhabi, Yas Island’s Formula 1 circuit and theme parks, and the Corniche waterfront promenade. It is more conservative than Dubai but has alcohol available in licensed venues, and the level of social restriction is meaningfully less than Saudi Arabia.

Abu Dhabi’s standout advantage for teachers is ADEK — the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge’s public school programme. This is the largest and most structured foreign teacher placement programme in the UAE, placing qualified teachers in government schools across the emirate with government-backed salaries, support infrastructure, and professional development.

Third emirate

Sharjah: the practical alternative

Sharjah is the UAE’s most conservative emirate — alcohol is entirely prohibited, the dress code is stricter than Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and the social environment is more traditional. It is also significantly cheaper. Teachers who live in Sharjah and commute to Dubai (30–45 minutes on the E11 in off-peak traffic; 60–90 minutes at peak) can save AED 3,000–5,000/month on rent compared with living in Dubai itself.

Sharjah has its own teaching market, concentrated in government schools and the University of Sharjah, American University of Sharjah, and other private institutions. SPEA (Sharjah Private Education Authority) regulates private schools. Salaries are slightly below Dubai equivalents but significantly below living costs — making Sharjah a financially efficient base for teachers who can work with the dry emirate lifestyle.

Sharjah is also becoming a serious cultural destination in its own right — its heritage district, art museums (Sharjah Art Foundation hosts the biennial Sharjah Biennial), and the Sharjah Light Festival are among the UAE’s genuinely interesting cultural offerings. Teachers who engage with this side of Sharjah describe a more authentic Gulf experience than Dubai’s tourist-oriented environment.

Northern emirate

Ras Al Khaimah: beaches, mountains, and lower costs

Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) is the UAE’s northernmost emirate — and one of its most scenic. The Hajar Mountains provide dramatic terrain for hiking; the coastline has some of the best beaches in the UAE; the pace of life is genuinely slower than Dubai or Abu Dhabi. RAK has been growing its tourism infrastructure significantly, with Wynn Al Marjan Island opening as the UAE’s first casino resort, making the emirate an increasingly interesting destination.

RAK’s teaching market is smaller than Dubai or Abu Dhabi but has distinct advantages: lower competition for positions, lower living costs (~$1,800/month total), and a community-oriented expat environment that teachers who find Dubai impersonal tend to prefer. RAK Medical University, American University of Ras Al Khaimah, and a network of private schools provide teaching opportunities across different sectors. The emirate is accessible to both Dubai (1 hour) and Abu Dhabi (2 hours) for weekend trips.

Questions

Abu Dhabi & Beyond FAQ

Is it worth commuting from Sharjah to Dubai?

Financially, yes — the AED 3,000–5,000/month rental saving is significant. Practically, it depends on your commute timing and tolerance. The E11 Sheikh Zayed Road is one of the UAE’s busiest routes, and peak-hour commutes (7am–9am, 4pm–7pm) can stretch to 90 minutes each way. Teachers with morning school start times sometimes find this deeply tiring. Teachers with mid-morning starts or reverse-peak commutes find it very manageable. Know your school’s schedule before committing to Sharjah accommodation.

What is ADEK and how do I apply?

Requirements: formal teaching licence (PGCE, QTS, or equivalent state certification), 2+ years of classroom experience, relevant subject degree. Placements are across Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain, and the Western Region.
