I went to Thailand
chasing a girl.
She said yes.
That's how TEFL Heaven started. Not with a business plan — with a Scotsman on MSN Messenger inviting himself on a girl's flight to Bangkok.
How TEFL Heaven actually started
I didn't go to Thailand to teach English. I went because I liked a girl who didn't like me back. I was a student in Scotland, she was going to Thailand for the summer, and I did the only sensible thing: I invited myself on her flight. I told her I'd split as soon as we landed in Bangkok. She could go north, I'd go south. Just help me through the airport.
Awkwardly, she said yes. Two weeks later I was walking out of Suvarnabhumi Airport for the first time — and the heat hit me in the face like a wall. I'd grown up in Scotland. I had never felt air like that. I had stepped into a completely new world, and every single thing about it interested me.
"Everything about Thailand interested me to the maximum level — the food, the people, the culture, the islands. Everything was cheap. It was like I'd entered a brand new world and every day was amazing."
At the end of those three months, she invited me to the islands. Ten days in Koh Tao. And something shifted. I wasn't anxious anymore. I wasn't needy. I was just myself — relaxed, present, and happy in a way I hadn't been before. She noticed. She let her hair down. She got to know me for me.
We went back to the UK. A few months later I asked her to marry me. Seven months after that, we were married — and back in Thailand, teaching English again. When we left, we decided to make a business of it. We wanted to help other people have the experience we'd had: the adventure, the personal growth, the fulfilment you get from truly living abroad, not just visiting.
That was over fifteen years ago. We've been married for more than thirteen years, had five kids, and built TEFL Heaven into a family business that has sent over 3,000 teachers to over twelve countries. It's still ours. It's still personal. And I'm still in Bangkok.
When the videos come in — teachers telling us what their year abroad did for them, how it changed them — I love watching them. That's why we do this. Not the business of it. The transformation of it. The thing that happened to me on a beach in Koh Tao, happening to someone else in Seoul or Prague or Medellín.
"Feel the fear and do it anyway. It's important to dream — but even more important to make sure your dreams become a reality."
What TEFL Heaven believes
After placing teachers since 2007 we have strong opinions about what makes a good placement — and what doesn't.
Honest destination advice
Costa Rica is a break-even lifestyle destination — not a wealth-building one. Cambodia is an adventure market. South Korea is the money destination in Asia. We tell you what each country is actually like, not what the brochures say. You should choose based on what you actually want.
No one gets left behind
We stay involved throughout your contract. If something goes wrong with your school — and occasionally things do — we sort it. That's what it means to be a placement company rather than a directory. We've been personally burned by bad operators before, and we won't let it happen to our teachers.
It's a family business
TEFL Heaven is not a corporation. It's mine and my wife's. Our five kids have grown up with this business. That changes how we run it — every teacher who comes to us is someone we have a genuine stake in. We want their year abroad to transform them the way ours transformed us.
Dreams don't stay dreams
The number of people who tell us they've wanted to teach abroad for years but something always got in the way — life, fear, not knowing where to start — is enormous. Our job is to make the path clear and the process manageable. Then get out of your way.
