International schools

International schools are the UAE’s most coveted and best-paid teaching positions. Dubai leads in volume — the city has over 200 private schools rated Good or Outstanding by KHDA, many following British, American, or IB curricula. Abu Dhabi has a smaller but equally prestigious international school sector. Salaries of AED 15,000–22,000+/month are standard at well-established international schools; senior and leadership positions exceed this.

★ What makes international schools different

  • Best total packages in the UAE market
  • Modern facilities, well-resourced classrooms
  • Professional development and CPD built-in
  • Structured academic year with generous holidays
  • Dependent schooling often included (for teachers with families)

  • Minimum 2 years’ classroom experience (most require 3–5+)
  • Degree in relevant subject or education
  • CELTA / Level 5 TEFL strongly preferred
  • KHDA/ADEK approval and TLS licence
  • Enhanced background check (DBS or equivalent)
  • Applications typically 6–12 months ahead
Government programme

Government schools: ADEK and public education

Abu Dhabi’s Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) runs one of the Gulf’s most significant foreign teacher recruitment programmes, placing qualified international teachers in UAE public schools alongside Emirati staff. The programme is structured, well-supported, and government-backed — providing a genuine contribution to the national education system rather than just the premium private sector.

Government school positions offer strong salaries (AED 9,000–15,000/month), a structured academic year, professional development support, and the opportunity to work closely with Emirati students in settings that most expat teachers never access. The work is challenging — class dynamics in UAE public schools are different from the international school bubble — but teachers who take on this route consistently describe it as a more meaningful professional experience.

🏫

Who accesses government positions: Primarily qualified teachers with formal teaching licences (PGCE, QTS, state teaching certification), relevant experience, and willingness to work with Emirati students in mixed-ability classroom settings. ADEK positions are employer-applied and require TLS licence plus ADEK-specific clearances. Teach Away has been an ADEK recruitment partner since 2009.

Most accessible route

Language schools and training centres

Private language schools and training centres represent the most accessible entry point into UAE teaching for candidates without formal teaching licences. They operate across all seven emirates, primarily serving adult professionals, business English students, and English for Academic Purposes learners preparing for university. Well-known international chains (British Council, International House, English First) operate UAE locations alongside local chains.

UAE language schools have higher standards than many other global markets. The Level 5 TEFL (CELTA equivalent) is effectively the market floor at reputable institutions in 2026 — basic 120-hour online certificates may be accepted at less prestigious venues but are increasingly insufficient for competitive positions. Teaching experience is also preferred even at language schools, which reflects the UAE’s status as a competitive market throughout.

📚

What language school teaching involves

Adult students; general English, business English, IELTS/Cambridge preparation. Evening and weekend schedules standard — students attend after work. Teaching 20–28 hours per week. Modern facilities, structured syllabi. AED 8,000–14,000/month. Benefits typically include housing allowance and annual flights rather than full compound accommodation.

📋

Minimum requirements

Bachelor’s degree (any subject); Level 5 TEFL or CELTA (180-hour minimum increasingly standard); some teaching experience preferred; TLS licence required even for language schools; clean background check; UAE residence visa sponsored by employer. Most language schools won’t process applications from teachers without prior classroom experience.

Academic positions

Universities and higher education

The UAE’s university sector has grown dramatically since 2000. NYU Abu Dhabi, Khalifa University, UAE University, American University of Sharjah, University of Sharjah, and dozens of branch campuses of international universities all employ EAP and foundation English instructors. New York University Abu Dhabi’s prestige and research output rival the best universities globally; other institutions are more vocationally oriented.

University positions typically require Master’s degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or English Education, plus demonstrable EAP or higher education teaching experience. Senior academic roles require PhDs and publication records. Conditions are generally excellent: structured academic year with generous research time, professional development funding, and salaries of AED 11,000–18,000/month depending on seniority.

Government vocational

Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT)

HCT is the UAE’s largest national provider of higher education, operating 16 campuses across all seven emirates and teaching approximately 23,000 Emirati students. English language instruction is a core component of all HCT programmes, creating consistent demand for qualified English teachers as part of the national workforce development agenda.

HCT positions are government-backed, well-structured, and professionally respected. Salaries of AED 12,000–17,000/month with comprehensive benefits. Require teaching qualification and relevant experience. HCT teaching means working primarily with young Emirati nationals preparing for careers in business, technology, engineering, and healthcare — a culturally and professionally distinctive experience compared to international school teaching.

Questions

Job types FAQ

Can I move between job types once I’m in the UAE?

Yes — and this is a common progression path. Teachers often enter through language schools or smaller private schools, build UAE classroom experience and complete their TLS licence, then transition to international school or ADEK positions after 1–2 years. Your UAE teaching experience, TLS licence, and school references all carry value in subsequent applications. Job transfers require NOC from your current employer and a new residence visa sponsorship from the new employer.

Are UAE schools co-educational?

It varies by school type and emirate. International schools following British or American curricula are typically fully co-educational. Government schools are gender-segregated — male teachers in male schools, female teachers in female schools. Private language schools can be either. ADEK placements may be in gender-segregated settings. Confirm the specific arrangement with your prospective employer before accepting.
