Teachers around the world — teach English abroad
The honest guide

Teaching English abroad is real. So is the gap between expectation and reality.

Most "teach abroad" content is written to sell you something — a TEFL course, a placement program, a dream. We've been placing teachers since 2007 and we've seen what works and what doesn't. This guide covers all 26 major teaching destinations honestly: what you'll earn, what you actually need, what daily life looks like, and which countries suit which kind of person.

The short version: South Korea saves money. Thailand changes people. Cambodia opens doors without a degree. Saudi Arabia funds life goals. Prague is beautiful and pays modestly. Colombia surprises everyone. Read on for the full picture.

Your starting point

How to choose your destination

The best destination depends entirely on what you want from the experience. There's no universally "best" country — only the best fit for your priorities.

💰 I want to save money

Tax-free Middle East packages or high-salary East Asia are your targets. Maximising savings means accepting less lifestyle freedom or a more structured working environment.

🌏 I want adventure and lifestyle

Southeast Asia and Latin America. You won't save enormous amounts but you'll live well, travel constantly, and experience genuinely transformative cultures on a low cost of living.

🎓 I want to start without a degree

Several countries don't require a university degree — just an accredited TEFL certificate, English fluency, and a clean background check.

🏛️ I want Europe and culture

Europe offers lifestyle over salary — beautiful cities, extraordinary culture, and a teaching experience very different from Asia. The trade-off is lower pay and higher costs.

Asia

9 countries

The world's largest ESL market — highest salaries, most structured programs, and the most variety.

Mike Maitland — TEFL Heaven founder

"I didn't go to Thailand to teach English. I went because I was chasing a girl. She eventually said yes — on a beach in Koh Tao. We came back, got married, and built TEFL Heaven to help other people find what we found: a life bigger than the one they left behind."

Common questions

Teach English abroad — FAQ

Do I need a degree to teach English abroad?
Not everywhere. Many countries — including Cambodia, Colombia, Argentina, Spain, and Mexico — hire teachers with a TEFL certificate and no degree. Countries like Japan, South Korea, and China require a bachelor's degree for visa purposes. Each country guide above has a clear requirements section.
Do I need to be a native English speaker?
No. Non-native English speakers teach successfully in most markets, particularly in Latin America and parts of Europe. Some countries and individual schools do prefer native speakers, but the reality of the global TEFL market in 2026 is that fluency and a solid TEFL qualification matter more than passport nationality in most places.
Which country pays English teachers the most?
In absolute terms, UAE and Saudi Arabia offer the highest packages when you include tax-free salary plus free housing. South Korea and Hong Kong offer the best combination of high salary and high quality of life. China pays well but costs and conditions vary significantly by city and school.
What TEFL certificate do I actually need?
A 120-hour accredited TEFL certificate is the industry standard and meets the requirements for almost all teaching jobs worldwide. CELTA is the gold standard for some employers, but accredited online TEFL courses are widely accepted across Asia, Latin America, and Europe. The key word is accredited — not all TEFL certificates are equal.
Can I teach English abroad if I'm over 40?
Yes. Age is only a formal barrier in a small number of countries (China and some Saudi programs have upper age limits). In most markets, experience and maturity are considered assets. Many TEFL Heaven teachers have been in their 40s, 50s, and beyond. Career changers and people returning to work are very well-suited to teaching abroad.
How long does it take to get a teaching job abroad?
With a degree and TEFL certificate, most teachers find a position within 2–8 weeks of active job searching, depending on the country and time of year. September and January are peak hiring months in most markets. TEFL Heaven's placement program guarantees school introductions and significantly shortens the process.
