The TEFL/TESOL certificate

A TEFL or TESOL certificate is the essential qualification for English teachers in Thailand. Most schools require a minimum of 120 hours. Thai schools increasingly distinguish between in-person courses with observed teaching practice and online-only certificates.

In-person vs online

An in-person TEFL course with observed classroom practice is significantly more valuable than an online certificate in the Thai market. TEFL Heaven's certification is conducted in person, with real students, in Thailand.

What makes a TEFL certificate recognised in Thailand?

Minimum 120 contact hours (not self-study hours)
Accredited by a recognised international body
Includes observed teaching practice with real learners
Not a "weekend course" or certificate completed in under one week

The bachelor's degree requirement

A bachelor's degree from an accredited university is a legal requirement for a Thai work permit. The degree does not need to be in education or English — any subject is accepted. Your degree certificate will need to be submitted as part of the work permit application. An apostilled copy is increasingly required.

What if I don't have a degree?

Without a degree, teaching legally in Thailand at a government or registered private school is not possible. Cambodia is one of the few countries in Asia where teaching positions are available without a degree — TEFL Heaven has a Cambodia program for this situation.

Criminal background check

A national criminal background check from your home country is required for Thai work permit applications, issued within the past 3–6 months. In the UK this is a DBS Enhanced check; in the US, the FBI check; in Australia, the Australian Federal Police check.

Allow enough time

Background checks can take 2–8 weeks depending on your country. Apply as soon as you decide to proceed — it is often the longest lead-time document. TEFL Heaven tells you exactly what to apply for as soon as you enquire.

Requirements FAQ

Does my degree subject matter?
No. For government and private school positions, any bachelor's degree subject is acceptable. The degree requirement is about demonstrating educational attainment, not subject expertise.
Do I need prior teaching experience?
Not for most entry-level positions. Government schools and language academies hire first-time teachers regularly, provided they have a recognised TEFL certificate with observed teaching practice.
Is the TEFL Heaven certificate recognised by Thai schools?
Yes. The TEFL Heaven certification is a 120-hour internationally accredited in-person course with observed teaching practice — it meets the requirements of government schools, private schools, and language academies across Thailand.
What is an apostille and do I need one?
An apostille is an internationally recognised authentication of a document. For Thailand, apostilling your degree strengthens your work permit application. In the UK the FCDO handles this (approximately £30, takes 1–4 weeks). Start early.
