Teach English in Bangkok

The largest teaching market in Thailand — job options, salary, the best areas to live, and what Bangkok life is really like.

Teaching English in Bangkok — what to expect

Bangkok is the largest English teaching market in Thailand by a significant margin. It is also one of the most extraordinary cities in the world to live in — overwhelming at first, deeply compelling after a few months. For teachers who want maximum job options, urban energy, and a city that never stops moving, Bangkok is the obvious choice.

The Bangkok teaching market

Bangkok has the highest concentration of English teaching positions in Thailand. Every school type is represented — from large government schools in outer districts to elite international schools in central Bangkok. The sheer volume of positions means teachers can be significantly more selective than in other Thai cities.

The market is also more competitive — Bangkok attracts experienced teachers and those with stronger qualifications. Having a recognised TEFL certificate and a degree is the baseline, not a differentiator.

Government vs private in Bangkok

Bangkok government school positions pay less than equivalent private school roles but often offer more stable hours and genuine cultural immersion in local Thai communities. Private and international school positions pay more but have higher expectations. Both are plentiful in Bangkok.

Largest employer
Government schools

Bangkok has hundreds of government schools, many actively recruiting. Strong cultural immersion, community feel, lower salary than private.

Private & bilingual schools

Bangkok's private school sector is extensive. Many top private schools recruit foreign teachers for English programs and bilingual curricula.

International schools

Bangkok has 50+ international schools including NIST, Shrewsbury, Bangkok Patana. Highest salaries but require home teaching qualification.

Bangkok salary vs living costs

Bangkok pays more than most other Thai cities — but costs more too. The key variable is where you live. Teachers in central Bangkok (near BTS/MRT lines) pay premium rent. Teachers willing to live in outer districts or flatshare save significantly.

Best areas to live in Bangkok as a teacher

Bangkok is vast. Where you live significantly affects your quality of life and commute. Most experienced Bangkok teachers advise prioritising proximity to a BTS or MRT station over everything else.

On Nut / Phra Khanong
7,000–12,000 THB/mo rent

One of the most popular areas for foreign teachers. On the BTS Sukhumvit line, significantly cheaper than central Bangkok, excellent street food scene, genuine local neighbourhood feel.

Lat Phrao / Ratchadaphisek
6,000–10,000 THB/mo rent

On the MRT, good value for money, strong local Thai neighbourhood. Less international than Sukhumvit but well-connected. Good school access in northern Bangkok.

Ari / Saphan Kwai
9,000–14,000 THB/mo rent

Popular with younger expats and teachers. Good coffee shops, markets, BTS access. More expensive than On Nut but lively and walkable.

Bang Na / Bearing
5,000–9,000 THB/mo rent

Outer east Bangkok. Lower costs, less traffic than central areas, large international school cluster nearby. Worth considering if placed at a school in this direction.

Life in Bangkok outside the classroom

Bangkok rewards teachers who are curious and willing to explore. The city is vast and contains multitudes — ancient temples beside shopping malls, floating markets beside sky bars, world-class street food on every corner.

Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew
Thailand's most sacred site — 20 minutes from anywhere in central Bangkok.
Chatuchak Weekend Market
One of the world's largest weekend markets. 15,000+ stalls. Essential Bangkok experience.
Chinatown (Yaowarat)
The best street food in Bangkok — go at night when the stalls are fully open.
Chao Phraya river & canals
Take the express boat, explore the khlongs by longtail, visit Wat Arun at dusk.
Muay Thai
Bangkok has dozens of gyms. Many teachers train regularly. Lumphini and Rajadamnern stadiums for live bouts.

Bangkok teaching FAQ

Is Bangkok better for teachers than Chiang Mai?
It depends on what you want. Bangkok has more jobs, higher salaries, and the energy of a world city. Chiang Mai has lower costs, slower pace, and access to northern Thailand's mountains and culture. Neither is objectively better. TEFL Heaven can help you work out which is right for your situation.
Is Bangkok safe?
Bangkok is generally very safe for foreign teachers, particularly in the areas where most expats and teachers live. Petty theft exists in tourist-heavy areas. Road safety is a more significant concern — Bangkok traffic is intense and motorcycles require respect.
Can I survive in Bangkok without speaking Thai?
Yes. Bangkok has a large English-speaking expat population, extensive English signage in most areas, and the tourism infrastructure means English is understood in most daily situations. Thai language skills significantly improve the experience but are not required.
How do I get around Bangkok?
BTS Skytrain and MRT metro are the most reliable for avoiding Bangkok's notorious traffic. Grab (ride-hailing) works well for areas not covered by rail. Motorcycle taxis are fast for short distances but require caution. The river express boat is useful for east-west travel and genuinely enjoyable.
Is the cost of living really higher in Bangkok than other Thai cities?
Yes, primarily due to rent. Food and transport are similar or only slightly higher. The key is where you live — choosing accommodation in the outer districts on a BTS or MRT line rather than central Bangkok can cut your rent by 30–50% without significantly affecting your commute.
