Teach English in
Brno
Less competition, lower rents, faster job placement, and 1.5 hours from Vienna. Brno is the most underrated TEFL destination in Central Europe.
Teaching English in Brno: the smarter first move
Brno is Czechia's best-kept TEFL secret. Lower rents, less competition, a massive student population, and growing corporate demand — all in a genuinely beautiful university city with its own distinct culture.
Masaryk University and five others
Brno is one of Europe's great student cities. Six universities create constant demand for English tuition — from exam prep to academic writing — across a year-round calendar.
Less competition per vacancy
Brno consistently has fewer teachers per available job than Prague. First-time TEFL teachers often fill a full timetable within 2–4 weeks — roughly twice as fast as Prague.
30–40% lower rents than Prague
A flatshare room costs 7,000–10,000 CZK in Brno vs 10,000–14,000 CZK in Prague. This single difference often makes Brno's monthly surplus better despite nominally lower salaries.
Growing corporate sector
Brno hosts Honeywell, IBM, Red Hat, and hundreds of tech and manufacturing firms. Business English demand has grown significantly in the last decade — and the corporate market is less saturated than Prague's.
Highest English proficiency in Czechia
The TEFL Org notes that Brno — not Prague — has the highest English proficiency levels in the country. This makes day-to-day life easier for new arrivals who don't yet speak Czech.
2.5 hours from Vienna and Prague
Brno sits between Prague (2.5hr) and Vienna (1.5hr), making both easy day trips or weekends. Bratislava is just 1.5hr. Few cities offer this much European accessibility.

Brno neighbourhoods for teachers
Brno City Centre (Brno-střed)
Walkable to most language schools, great café scene, beautiful architecture. More expensive by Brno standards but still half of central Prague. Flatshare rooms: 8,500–11,000 CZK.
Žabovřesky
Quiet residential area popular with expats and young professionals. Green spaces, good trams, family feel. Very popular with long-term teachers. Flatshare rooms: 7,000–9,500 CZK.
Bohunice / Starý Lískovec
University hospital district, lots of student accommodation, very affordable. Good bus connections. Not as pretty, but highly practical. Flatshare rooms: 6,000–8,500 CZK.
Who Brno suits best: First-time TEFL teachers who want to build experience quickly, teachers who prioritise quality of life over salary maximisation, those moving from a non-TEFL background who need time to build their client base, and anyone who prefers a city with a genuine local feel over Prague's tourism saturation.
