Teaching English in Prague: what you actually need to know

Prague is the most sought-after TEFL destination in Central Europe — and the most competitive. Here is an honest picture of what the job market looks like, where to live, what to earn, and whether it's right for you.

💼

Corporate English dominates

Prague's economy is driven by multinationals and international finance. Business English for professionals is the highest-demand, highest-paid segment — and most work is concentrated in Prague.

🏙️

UNESCO World Heritage city centre

Prague is genuinely one of Europe's most beautiful cities. Living here is the experience itself — the architecture, culture, and café scene are not overstated.

✈️

Best transport links in the region

Václav Havel Airport serves 60+ destinations. Rail connections to Vienna (4hr), Berlin (4hr), and Budapest (6hr) make Prague the best-connected city in Central Europe for weekend travel.

👥

Large expat teacher community

Prague has the biggest English teacher community in Czechia — meetups, Facebook groups, and WhatsApp networks make it easier to find work, housing, and social connection than smaller cities.

⚠️

Fierce competition for jobs

The most applications per vacancy in the country. New arrivals often take 4–8 weeks to secure a full timetable. Having strong qualifications, a demo lesson video, and arriving before September are all essential.

💰

Higher costs than the rest of Czechia

Prague rents have risen significantly. A flatshare room costs 10,000–14,000 CZK/month, and a 1-bed apartment runs 18,000–25,000 CZK. Salaries are higher, but the surplus advantage over cheaper cities is often smaller than expected.

Best neighbourhoods to live in Prague

🏘️

Žižkov (Prague 3)

Popular with expat teachers. Lively, affordable, great local restaurants and bars. Metro line A and trams connect easily to the centre. Flatshare rooms: 9,000–12,000 CZK.

🎨

Holešovice (Prague 7)

Artsy, gentrifying neighbourhood north of the centre. Strong café culture, riverside access. Growing expat community. Flatshare rooms: 10,000–13,000 CZK.

🌳

Vinohrady (Prague 2)

The most popular neighbourhood among long-term expats. Beautiful architecture, excellent restaurants, walkable to centre. More expensive: flatshare rooms 12,000–15,000 CZK.

🔨

Smíchov (Prague 5)

More working-class feel, western bank of the Vltava. Very good metro connections. Lower rents. Less trendy but highly practical. Flatshare rooms: 8,500–11,000 CZK.

🏢

Praha-západ (Western suburbs)

Where Amazon, IPSOS, and Siemens have offices. Lower rents, more corporate teaching nearby. Less convenient for city social life but practical if your work is west-facing.

🚇

Avoid the centre (Praha 1)

Astronomical rents, almost no language schools. Most teachers live in Prague 2–8 and commute via metro (annual pass: ~3,800 CZK — exceptionally cheap).

How to find a job in Prague

Arrive before the September hiring peak

Schools interview face-to-face and start hiring August–September. Arrive by mid-August minimum. Teachers who arrive in October often struggle to find full-time hours until January.

Prepare a demo teaching video

3–5 minutes, professional camera setup, demonstrating a real Business English concept. Many Prague schools request this before inviting to interview. It differentiates you from dozens of applicants who send only a CV.

Apply directly to schools — not just boards

Direct email applications with a tailored cover letter and sample Business English lesson plan have higher conversion rates than job board applications. Target school websites directly and look for the "Careers" or "Join Us" page.

Key job boards

Expats.cz, Jobs.cz, Dave's ESL Café, The TEFL Org Jobs Centre, and Facebook groups (Prague Expat English Teachers). LinkedIn is increasingly used by corporate language training companies.

Prague vs Brno — consider carefully. For first-time teachers, Brno often delivers better results. Lower competition, faster timetable build, lower rents. If you're experienced or specifically targeting Business English or international schools, Prague is the right call.
