Teach English in Milan Italy
Italy's strongest teaching market for corporate English — higher salaries, fashion and finance demand, and Lake Como on your doorstep.
Why teachers choose Milan
Milan is Italy's economic powerhouse — the centre of fashion, finance, design, and manufacturing. For English teachers, that means the strongest corporate English market in Italy, higher salaries than Rome or Florence, and a genuinely international city with a large expat community. It's also less obviously romantic than Rome or Florence, which puts some teachers off — but those who choose it tend to stay longer, earn more, and build stronger careers.
The teaching market in Milan
Milan has a large language school sector, a significant private and international school market, and by far the strongest corporate English market in Italy. Business English — delivered in companies, banks, and law firms — pays significantly better than language school work. Teachers with a business background are particularly well-positioned in Milan.
| Job type | Salary | Notes |

| International school | €2,000–3,500/mo | QTS/PGCE required |
| Corporate English | €35–60/hr | Best earner, build via network |
Milan neighbourhoods for teachers
Milan's neighbourhoods have distinct characters. For teachers, the most popular are:
The canal district — Milan's most social neighbourhood, lined with aperitivo bars and restaurants. Slightly further from the centre but the best social scene. Popular with younger teachers.
Up-and-coming neighbourhood north of the centre — creative, affordable by Milan standards, excellent bar and restaurant scene, good transport links.
South of the centre — residential, well-connected, good mix of local and expat life. Slightly cheaper than the very centre.
Life outside the classroom in Milan
Milan's location is extraordinary for weekend travel. Lake Como is an hour by train. The Italian Alps and ski resorts are 90 minutes. Venice is 2.5 hours. The Cinque Terre coast is 2.5 hours. Florence is 2 hours. Teachers based in Milan genuinely explore northern Italy and beyond every weekend.
The aperitivo institution
Milan invented the modern aperitivo. From 6–9pm, bars across the city serve free food with drinks — effectively a free dinner if you have two glasses of wine or spritz. For teachers on modest salaries, this is both a social ritual and a genuine budget strategy.
