English Teaching Job Types in Italy

Language schools, private schools, corporate English and tutoring in Italy — what each pays, what each requires, and how to combine them.

Most common

Scuole di lingua — language schools

Private language schools (scuole di lingua) are the largest employer of foreign English teachers in Italy. They're found in every city, concentrated particularly in Rome, Milan, Florence, Naples, and Bologna. Most teach adult students — business professionals, university students, and exam candidates. Hours follow the classic split pattern: mornings and evenings, with afternoons free.

Private and international schools

Italy has a strong private school sector, from bilingual Italian schools to fully international schools following IB, British, or American curricula. These schools pay significantly better than language schools — €1,500–3,000/month — and offer more stable working conditions. However they typically require a home-country teaching qualification (QTS, PGCE, state certification) plus experience, particularly international schools in Rome and Milan.

Best rates

Corporate English — the income multiplier

Italy's substantial business sector — fashion, finance, manufacturing, food, and design — creates consistent demand for corporate English training. Hourly rates of €30–60 are achievable, significantly above language school rates. Building corporate clients takes 2–4 months of networking and word of mouth, but the income difference is substantial. Milan is particularly strong for corporate work.

Best supplement

Private tutoring

Private tutoring — particularly exam preparation (Cambridge, IELTS, TOEFL) and children's after-school lessons — is the most effective income supplement for Italy-based teachers. Rates of €25–50 per hour are common. Most teachers build a roster within 1–3 months through word of mouth, school notice boards, and platforms like Ripetizioni.it.

Job types FAQ

Which job type is easiest to get as a new teacher?
Language schools are the most accessible entry point. Walk-in applications with a CV, degree, and TEFL certificate are effective, particularly in September when schools start their academic year.
Can I combine job types?
Yes — this is the standard approach. Most experienced teachers in Italy combine a language school contract (for stability) with private tutoring and/or corporate clients (for income). This combination typically yields €1,500–2,500 per month.
Is corporate English only available in big cities?
Milan is the strongest market, but corporate demand exists in any city with a business base. Bologna, Turin, and Verona all have active corporate English markets.
