English Teaching Job Types in Guatemala

Language schools, private bilingual schools, tutoring, and NGO work — what each pays, what each requires, and how teachers combine them.

Largest sector

Language schools — the main employer

Private language schools and institutes are the primary employer of foreign English teachers in Guatemala, concentrated in Guatemala City's Zona 10 and 14 business districts and throughout Antigua. Most teach adult students — business professionals, university students, and exam candidates. Hours are split morning and evening, with afternoons typically free.

FeatureDetail
Typical hours7–10am and 5–8pm, split schedule
Class size4–12 students typically
Salary4,000–8,000 GTQ/month
Contract length3–6 months, renewable
Private schools

Private bilingual schools

Guatemala has a substantial private bilingual school sector, particularly in Guatemala City and Antigua, serving the children of middle-class and wealthy Guatemalan families and expat communities. These schools offer more stable hours, better working conditions, and higher salaries than most language schools. They typically require a university degree and TEFL certificate, and often prefer teachers with formal classroom experience.

International schools

A small number of fully international schools in Guatemala City — following IB, American, or British curricula — offer the highest salaries in the market. These require home-country teaching qualifications and significant experience. Competition is stiff but the packages are significantly better.

Best income supplement

Private tutoring — the income multiplier

Private tutoring — particularly business English, exam preparation (TOEFL, IELTS), and children's after-school lessons — is where Guatemalan teachers can most effectively supplement their income. Rates of 80–150 GTQ per hour are achievable in Guatemala City and Antigua. Most teachers build their tutoring roster within 1–3 months of arrival.

Volunteer and NGO teaching

Guatemala has a significant NGO and volunteer sector offering English teaching opportunities, particularly in indigenous Maya communities outside Guatemala City and Antigua. These positions rarely pay — or pay subsistence stipends only. However they offer extraordinary cultural immersion, teach to genuinely underserved communities, and are often combined with Spanish study in Antigua. Many teachers do a short volunteer stint before transitioning to paid work.

Job types FAQ

Which job type is easiest to get as a new teacher?
Language schools are the most accessible. Walk-in applications to language schools in Antigua and Guatemala City's Zona 10 are effective, particularly if you arrive with your TEFL certificate, degree, and a well-prepared CV.
Can I combine job types?
Yes — most experienced teachers combine a language school contract with private tutoring. This is the standard approach to building a comfortable income in Guatemala.
Are there teaching jobs outside Guatemala City and Antigua?
Quetzaltenango (Xela) has a smaller but real teaching market and is popular with teachers who want a more local Guatemalan experience. Outside these three cities the market drops off significantly.
