Teach English in Guatemala City

Central America's largest teaching market — better salaries, more corporate demand, and the full range of school types, from language schools to international schools.

Why teachers choose Guatemala City

Guatemala City — or "Guate" as it's universally known — is the economic centre of Central America and by far the largest teaching market in Guatemala. It's not a beautiful city in the way Antigua is, but it's a real, working capital with genuine energy, a growing middle class, and real demand for English across the business, hospitality, and education sectors.

The teaching market in Guatemala City

Guatemala City has the most developed English teaching market in Central America outside Costa Rica. The concentration of multinationals, banks, law firms, and hospitality businesses in Zones 10 and 14 drives genuine corporate English demand. Language schools are more numerous and better-resourced than in Antigua, and international schools offer some of the best-paid teaching positions in the country.

Neighbourhoods for teachers

Guatemala City is divided into numbered zonas. For teachers, the relevant ones are:

Zona 10 (Zona Viva)

The upscale zone — shopping centres, restaurants, international hotels, and most language schools. Most expensive to live in but the centre of expat social life.

Zona 14 and 15

Residential and quieter, popular with expat families and teachers at private schools. Good value for larger apartments.

Zona 1 (Historic Centre)

The historic old city — atmospheric but requires more care. Some teachers choose it for the cultural immersion and lower costs.

The big decision

Guatemala City vs Antigua

Guatemala City
More jobs and better salaries
Corporate English demand
Less charming but more real
Higher costs
Better career development
International school opportunities
Antigua
More beautiful and walkable
Strong expat community
Lower costs
Smaller teaching market
Better Spanish immersion
Better lifestyle quality

Many teachers do both — start in Antigua for the softer landing, then move to Guatemala City for better pay and career development. Others commute between the two on a 45-minute shuttle.

Guatemala City FAQ

Is Guatemala City safe?
Guatemala City has a complicated reputation. Zones 10, 14, and 15 — where most expat teachers live and work — are significantly safer than other parts of the city. Common sense applies: use Uber rather than street taxis, don't walk alone late at night in unfamiliar areas, and follow the same guidance you'd apply in any large Latin American capital. Most teachers who live in the expat zones describe feeling comfortable in their daily routines.
Can I live in Antigua and work in Guatemala City?
Yes — many teachers do this. The shuttle takes 45–60 minutes each way and costs around 50 GTQ. It's manageable for a daily commute if your teaching schedule allows, though many prefer to base in the city once they've settled.
How do I find housing in Guatemala City?
Facebook groups (search 'expats in Guatemala' or 'Guatemala City housing') are the most effective. Most expat-friendly apartments are in Zona 10, 14, and 15. Furnished apartments aimed at expats are widely available in these zones.
