Requirements to Teach English in Spain

What you actually need — and what varies by route, school type, and nationality. The picture is more nuanced than most guides suggest, and the legal requirement vs market reality distinction matters a great deal.

Law vs market reality: what Spain actually expects

Spain has no national law requiring English teachers at private language academies to hold a bachelor’s degree. Technically, you can be hired without one. In practice, the competitive nature of the market — particularly in Madrid and Barcelona where qualified candidates compete for the same positions — means most desirable jobs will favour degree holders when other qualifications are equal.

The clearest way to understand Spain’s requirements is by route. Each teaching pathway has a distinct set of requirements — and none are identical.

🇪🇸

EU vs non-EU changes everything:

EU citizens can apply directly to private academies with just their NIE. Non-EU citizens face visa restrictions that shape which routes are realistically accessible — TEFL Heaven’s Spain programs require a degree; the student visa route has its own conditions. See the visa guide for the full nationality breakdown.

Qualification

TEFL certificate: what Spain requires and what it means

A TEFL/TESOL/CELTA certificate is not a legal requirement. In practice it is the single most important document for private academy employment — expected by virtually all reputable employers.

Minimum hours

The market standard is 120 hours as the credible minimum. Short online courses of 40–60 hours are not taken seriously by most academy hirers. For competitive positions, 120 hours from an accredited provider is the baseline. Trinity CertTESOL and Cambridge CELTA — both 100+ hours with an in-person practical component — are the premium qualifications and command higher starting salaries.

🏆

CELTA/CertTESOL advantage: Chain academies (British Council, Wall Street English, International House) and top independents consistently prefer or require CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL. These take 4–5 weeks full-time but open significantly more doors and typically command a €100–200/month salary premium at entry level over standard 120-hour TEFL holders.

Degree

Do you need a degree to teach English in Spain?

Where a degree is not legally required

  • Private language academies
  • Conversation partner roles
  • Private tutoring
  • Au pair / homestay teaching

Where a degree is required or essential

  • TEFL Heaven Spain program (bachelor’s required)
  • International schools (+ teaching license)
  • University positions (Master’s often required)
  • Most competitive academy positions

Without a degree: smaller independent language schools, conversation partner positions, private tutoring, and summer language camps. These are real income opportunities but come with lower salaries and fewer employment protections.

Questions

Requirements FAQ

Can I teach in Spain without a degree?

Yes, at private language academies — it is not a legal requirement. In practice the competitive market means most desirable positions prefer degree holders. Without a degree, smaller independent schools, conversation partner roles, summer camps, and private tutoring are the most accessible routes. TEFL Heaven’s Spain programs require a degree (or current enrolment).

Is an online TEFL certificate accepted in Spain?

Yes — 120-hour online TEFL certificates from accredited providers are accepted by most Spanish academies. In-person courses with a practical teaching component (CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL) are preferred for competitive and higher-paying positions. If you’re aiming for top Madrid or Barcelona academies, the in-person qualification is worth the investment.

Do my qualifications need to be translated?

For TEFL Heaven Spain programs: your documents are in English (no translation required). For private academies: most accept English-language qualifications directly. For formal visa applications, some documents may need an official Spanish translation (traducción jurada) — check your consulate’s specific requirements.
