Saudi Arabia Work Visa & Iqama Guide 2026
Saudi Arabia’s visa process is employer-driven — you cannot arrive and search for work. Your employer handles most of the Saudi-side administration. This guide covers every step from job offer to Iqama in hand.
How the Saudi work visa system works
Saudi Arabia operates an employer-sponsorship model for all foreign workers. You cannot obtain a Saudi work visa independently or arrive to look for work — your employer must initiate the entire process before you can enter the country to work. This is a fundamental difference from Europe’s student visa routes or South Korea’s E2 process.
The process works in two stages. First, you obtain a work visa (entry visa) which allows you to enter Saudi Arabia. Second, after arrival, you complete the Iqama (residency permit) process, which is your actual long-term work and residence authorisation in the Kingdom. The Iqama is the document that functions as your Saudi ID and enables all day-to-day activities — banking, driving, healthcare, and re-entry to the country.
As of 2025, Saudi Arabia has implemented a skill-based classification system for all new work permits, categorising roles as high-skilled, skilled, or basic. English teaching positions at qualified institutions typically fall in the “skilled” or “high-skilled” category. Your employer handles this classification through the Qiwa government platform.
From job offer to Iqama: the complete process
Secure a job offer and signed contract (remote)
Almost all Saudi teaching positions are offered and accepted remotely before arrival. Apply through specialist Middle East education recruiters, school websites, or major TEFL job boards. Interviews are conducted via video call. Once you have a signed contract, you begin document preparation in parallel with your employer’s visa application. Inform your employer immediately of all documents they need from you — their process cannot proceed without your paperwork.
Gather and authenticate your documents (6–10 weeks)
Begin immediately: the background check authentication is your longest lead-time item. For the degree: obtain an official copy and have it apostilled or authenticated by the relevant authority in your country. For the background check: obtain the national-level check (FBI for Americans, ACRO/DBS for UK, RCMP for Canadians) and apostille it. This can take 6–10 weeks total. You will also need: sealed university transcripts · TEFL certificate copy · medical forms · passport photos. Your employer will provide exact requirements — these can vary by institution type.
Employer processes work permit through Qiwa (4–6 weeks)
Your employer submits a work permit application through the Saudi Ministry of Human Resources’ Qiwa platform. Under the 2025 skill-based system, your role is classified as high-skilled, skilled, or basic. Once approved, the employer receives a Visa Authorisation Number for your application. Your employer manages this stage — your role is to respond quickly to any additional documentation requests. Processing typically takes 4–6 weeks.
Apply for work visa at Saudi consulate or embassy (1–2 weeks)
With the Visa Authorisation Number, you apply for the physical visa sticker at the Saudi consulate or embassy in your home country. Required documents typically include: your passport, the authorisation number, passport photos, and a consulate application form. Processing is typically 1–2 weeks. Visa fees are typically paid by your employer — confirm this in your contract.
Arrive and complete Iqama process (within 90 days)
You enter on a 90-day work visa. Within this period, your employer processes your Iqama (residency permit) through the Muqeem platform. You will need: medical examination at an approved Saudi health centre (testing includes HIV, TB, and general health) · biometrics registration at an immigration office · employer uploads all documents to Muqeem. Processing takes 1–3 weeks with complete files. Once issued, your Iqama is valid for one year and renewable. It enables: Saudi bank account · driving licence · mobile SIM · healthcare access · re-entry after travel abroad.

Document checklist
Documents you provide to your employer
- Authenticated / apostilled bachelor’s degree
- Authenticated national criminal background check
- Official university transcripts (sealed)
- TEFL certificate (copy)
- Valid passport (typically 6+ months validity)
- Passport-sized photos (several copies)
- Medical health declaration form
- Signed employment contract
Documents for the Saudi consulate
- Visa application form (from consulate)
- Valid passport
- Visa Authorisation Number from employer
- Passport photos
- Consulate-specific checklist (download from your consulate)
- Visa fee (confirm if employer pays or reimburses)
Authentication requirements: Saudi Arabia requires documents to be either apostilled (for countries party to the Hague Apostille Convention) or authenticated through the Saudi embassy in your country. Your employer should advise on the exact route required for your nationality. Incorrect or incomplete authentication is the most common cause of visa delays — clarify this early.
The Iqama: everything you need to know
The Iqama is your official residency permit and the primary identification document for all expatriates living in Saudi Arabia. Without it, you cannot legally work, open a bank account, rent accommodation independently, obtain a driving licence, or re-enter Saudi Arabia after travelling abroad.
What the Iqama enables
- Legal work in Saudi Arabia (for your sponsor employer)
- Saudi bank account opening
- Saudi driving licence application
- SIM card registration
- Healthcare access through your employer’s insurance
- Re-entry to Saudi Arabia after travel abroad
- Family sponsorship (spouse and children)
- Government service access (Absher platform)
Key Iqama rules
- Tied to your sponsoring employer — changing jobs requires formal transfer process
- Must be renewed annually before expiry — let it lapse and you face significant complications
- Exit/re-entry visa required to travel abroad (employer authorises through Absher)
- Employer pays Iqama fees (SAR 650–1,000/year) — confirm in contract
- Employer must be Nitaqat compliant (Saudi labour quotas) to issue Iqamas
Iqama renewal and changing employers
The Iqama is valid for one year and must be renewed annually. Your employer initiates the renewal through Muqeem and Absher. Renewals should be started at least 2 months before expiry. Letting your Iqama expire creates fines, travel restrictions, and potential deportation risk — stay on top of the timeline.
Changing employers: Your Iqama is tied to your sponsoring employer. To change schools, you need either: your current employer’s consent and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) · or completion of your current contract. After 12 months of employment, Saudi labour law provides stronger transfer rights for employees. Your new employer then takes over as your sponsor and processes the Iqama transfer through Qiwa.
Read your contract NOC clause carefully. Some contracts specify that you must complete the full term before transferring to another employer. Others are more flexible. This is worth understanding before signing — it affects your ability to move if the position turns out to be a poor fit.
Visa FAQ
Can I arrive in Saudi Arabia without a job offer?
Not to work legally. Saudi Arabia does not have a job seeker visa for English teachers in the way some countries do. You can enter on a tourist visa (now available online for many nationalities) to explore the country, but you cannot work legally on a tourist visa. All work requires a sponsored work visa obtained before or immediately upon arrival through your employer.
How long does the whole process take?
From “I have a job offer” to “I’m in Saudi Arabia with Iqama in hand”: approximately 3–4 months. The document authentication process takes 6–10 weeks. Employer work permit processing takes 4–6 weeks. Consulate visa issuance takes 1–2 weeks. Iqama processing after arrival takes 1–3 weeks. Starting document preparation before you have a confirmed offer — which is possible and advisable — reduces the total lead time significantly.
Can I bring my family to Saudi Arabia?
Yes — once you have a valid Iqama, you can sponsor your spouse and children under 18 for dependent Iqamas. You will need to demonstrate adequate accommodation and income. Dependents aged 18+ must obtain their own work visas. International schools often include dependent schooling allowances as part of the benefits package specifically to support teachers relocating with families.
