English Teaching Job Types in Peru

Language institutes, private tutoring, international schools and corporate English — what each pays, what each requires, and how to combine them.

Language institutes

Language institutes — the main employer

Private language institutes are by far the largest employer of foreign English teachers in Peru, concentrated in Lima's Miraflores, San Isidro, and Surco districts. Chains like ICPNA, Britanico, and Euroidiomas hire regularly, alongside dozens of independent academies. Hours are split — mornings and evenings — with afternoons free.

Private tutoring

Private tutoring — the income multiplier

Private tutoring is how most experienced teachers in Peru significantly boost their income. Rates of 50–100 PEN per hour are achievable in Lima, particularly for business English and exam preparation (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge). Building a roster of private students takes 1–3 months but can add 1,000–2,000 PEN per month on top of an institute salary.

USD pricing

Some teachers price private tutoring in USD — particularly for corporate clients and exam prep. This protects against sol fluctuations and is increasingly common in Lima's international business community.

International schools

International schools — the premium tier

Lima has a significant international school sector serving the children of diplomats, executives, and Peru's wealthiest families. Schools following IB, American, and British curricula offer the highest salaries — 3,000–6,000 PEN per month and above. However they almost always require a home-country teaching qualification (PGCE, state certification) in addition to TEFL.

Corporate English

Corporate English — growing demand

Lima's mining, finance, and international business sectors create strong demand for professional English training. Corporate rates (80–150 PEN per hour) are the highest available outside international schools. Building corporate clients requires confidence, business knowledge, and the ability to tailor lessons to specific professional contexts.

Job types FAQ

Can I combine multiple job types?
Yes — most experienced teachers in Lima combine an institute contract with private tutoring and/or corporate clients. This is the standard approach to building a comfortable income in Peru.
Which job type is easiest to get as a new teacher?
Language institutes are the most accessible for new teachers. Chains like Británico and ICPNA hire regularly and accept teachers with a degree and TEFL certificate without prior experience.
Are there teaching jobs outside Lima?
Yes — Cusco, Arequipa, and Trujillo all have language institutes and some bilingual schools. However the market is significantly smaller than Lima, and international school opportunities are Lima-concentrated.
