Requirements to Teach English in Colombia

Colombia’s requirements are accessible for most language school positions — TEFL certificate plus degree is the standard, without the mandatory national licensing system of the UAE or the extreme competition of South Korea. Here’s the full picture.

The landscape

Colombia’s requirements: accessible but competitive in key cities

Colombia sits in a practical middle position for TEFL requirements — more demanding than Guatemala (which has essentially no formal requirements at entry level) but significantly more accessible than the UAE (which requires a mandatory national teaching licence plus pedagogical assessments). For language school positions, TEFL certificate plus degree or equivalent experience is the effective standard. For international schools, the bar rises to formal teaching licence and significant classroom experience.

The competitive variable is city. Bogotá and Medellín attract large volumes of TEFL teacher applicants — both because they’re the most desirable cities and because they have the most positions. This means that in these cities specifically, having CELTA over a basic online certificate, having experience, and having a well-prepared application matters more than in smaller Colombian cities where competition is lower. Cartagena, Barranquilla, Cali, and the Eje Cafetero cities all have genuine teaching markets with less competition for positions.

📚

120hr online TEFL

Entry standard. Most language schools accept this. Smaller schools and some bilingual schools may hire on this basis alone. Floor for serious job applications.

🏆

CELTA / Level 5

Colombia market standard for Berlitz, EF, British Council, and Colombo Americano. Commands higher rates. Strongly recommended for Bogotá and Medellín. In-country CELTA available at British Council Colombia.

📋

Teaching licence (PGCE/QTS)

Required for international schools and most bilingual private schools. Opens premium salary positions. Strong advantage even at language schools for senior positions.

💬

British Council Colombia: The British Council operates in Bogotá and Medellín and offers in-country CELTA certification. Taking CELTA in Colombia achieves two goals simultaneously: obtaining the Colombia-market’s most valued TEFL qualification while establishing yourself in the teacher community before your job search even begins. A strong practical route for teachers arriving without certification.

Academic

Degree requirements

A bachelor’s degree is preferred by most established Colombian language schools and required for international schools, bilingual schools, and M-visa applications at established employers. Unlike Guatemala and to a lesser extent Peru, Colombia’s more professionalised language school sector consistently expects degree credentials — even where it is not a strict legal requirement. Teachers without degrees will find their options narrower, particularly in Bogotá and Medellín.

✓ Degree often not strictly required

  • Smaller independent language schools
  • Some regional cities outside Bogotá/Medellín
  • Government programmes (TEC, SENA)
  • Private tutoring

✗ Degree required

  • Berlitz, EF, British Council, Colombo Americano
  • International schools (+ teaching licence)
  • Bilingual private schools
  • Universities (Master’s strongly preferred)
  • M-visa applications at established employers

Experience requirements

Experience requirements vary significantly by employer type and city. Colombia is more accessible for first-time teachers than the UAE or South Korea, but more demanding than Guatemala or smaller Latin American markets. The practical framework:

PositionExperience expected
Language school (entry)Some experience preferred; strong TEFL + degree compensates for first-time teachers
Berlitz / EF / major chains1–2 years preferred; CELTA compensates for limited experience
Bilingual private school1–2 years; formal classroom management experience helpful
International school2–5+ years formal teaching; strong references essential
UniversityEAP or higher education teaching experience; Master’s compensates somewhat
Corporate EnglishBusiness English background; professional sector experience a strong plus

Spanish in Colombia

Spanish is not required for English teaching in Colombia — English classes are conducted entirely in English, and most reputable language schools practice an English-only classroom policy. However, daily life in Colombia outside the immediate expat infrastructure operates in Spanish, and teachers who speak Spanish describe a significantly richer experience: better integration with Colombian colleagues and students, easier daily navigation, and access to the country’s cultural life in ways that English-only existence misses.

Colombian Spanish is generally considered one of the clearest and most learner-accessible varieties in Latin America. Bogotá in particular is known for a neutral, standard accent that Spanish learners find relatively easy to understand. Most teachers describe progressing from beginner to functional B1 Spanish within 4–6 months of Colombian daily life — faster than in countries where English is more widely available as a fallback.

For bilingual school positions: basic to intermediate Spanish is increasingly expected for communicating with Colombian parents, administrative staff, and colleagues. If you’re targeting bilingual school positions specifically, A2–B1 Spanish before arrival is a practical advantage.

Questions

Requirements FAQ

Can non-native English speakers teach in Colombia?

Yes — Colombia is moderately open to non-native speakers with strong qualifications. Language schools care primarily about English proficiency level rather than passport. Non-native teachers from countries with strong English education systems (Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia, much of Europe) find work in Colombia. Formal proof of proficiency (IELTS 7.5+, Cambridge C2 Proficiency, or TOEFL iBT 100+) strengthens applications significantly. Native speakers from traditional English-speaking countries still have a practical advantage at the most competitive schools, particularly government-affiliated institutions.

Is Colombia a good first posting for new teachers?

Yes, particularly for teachers with TEFL certification and a degree. Language school positions are accessible for first-timers, particularly at smaller independent schools and in cities outside Bogotá and Medellín. Colombia is more demanding than Guatemala (where volunteer positions accept complete beginners) but more accessible than the UAE or South Korea. First-time teachers who certify before arrival, present professionally, and apply during peak hiring windows (November–January) consistently find language school positions within 2–4 weeks in Colombia.
