China offers the most compelling total compensation packages in this guide. The monthly salary is just the start — free housing, return flights, health insurance, and end-of-year bonuses create annual savings of $10,000–$30,000 that no other TEFL destination matches.

The total package

Why China’s compensation is genuinely transformative

The fundamental financial advantage of teaching in China cannot be understood by looking at monthly salary figures alone. The total compensation package — salary plus benefits — is what makes China exceptional. Consider two scenarios side by side: a language school teacher in Colombia earning $850/month salary; and a language centre teacher in a Chinese Tier 2 city earning RMB 12,000/month (~$1,650) plus free housing. The Colombia teacher pays $300/month rent. The China teacher pays nothing. Over 12 months, the China teacher’s effective income is $1,650 + $300 (housing value) = $1,950 equivalent, plus receives a return flight bonus ($500–$1,000 value) plus an end-of-year completion bonus (RMB 5,000–15,000). The Colombia teacher’s total: $850/month, no flights, no bonus.

This is why China teachers consistently report saving $10,000–$30,000 in a year while teachers in Latin America or Southeast Asia break even or save modestly. The package, not the salary, is the key.

Location

Salary and costs by city tier

City tierLanguage centreHousing cost (typical)Monthly living est.Monthly savings (language centre)
Tier 1 (Beijing/Shanghai)RMB 15–25KRMB 5–10K (but often free)RMB 5–8KRMB 7–15K ($960–$2,055)
Tier 1 (Shenzhen)RMB 14–35KRMB 4–7K (often free)RMB 4–6KRMB 8–20K ($1,095–$2,740)
Tier 2 (Chengdu/Hangzhou etc.)RMB 10–18KRMB 3–6K (often free)RMB 3–5KRMB 7–13K ($960–$1,780)
Tier 3+ citiesRMB 8–14KRMB 1–3K (often free)RMB 2–4KRMB 6–10K ($822–$1,370)

Note: Most positions include free housing — when this applies, the “housing cost” column is irrelevant and savings are even higher. The Tier 2 value proposition is compelling: lower absolute salary than Tier 1 but lower costs + often free housing = comparable or better net savings.

Beyond the salary

Understanding Chinese teacher benefit packages

🏠

Free housing or housing allowance

The single most valuable benefit in China’s teacher packages. Free furnished apartment (school-arranged) or monthly housing allowance of RMB 2,000–10,000. In Tier 1 cities where apartments cost RMB 6,000–12,000/month, free housing adds enormous value to the package. Always clarify: school-provided housing (better) or allowance (more flexible). A RMB 5,000 monthly housing allowance adds $8,200 of value to your annual income.

Return flight reimbursement

Most contracts include return international flight reimbursement at contract completion — typically RMB 8,000–20,000 ($1,100–$2,740). Some schools pay a one-way arrival flight as well. This benefit is contingent on completing your contract — it’s one of the primary financial incentives for contract completion. Clarify: is it reimbursed (you pay, school refunds) or paid directly?

🏪

Health insurance

Most language centres and all international schools provide basic health insurance. International school policies are comprehensive. Language centre policies are more basic — covering hospitalisation but sometimes not outpatient care. Verify coverage levels: does it cover dental, outpatient, specialist? Many experienced China teachers supplement employer insurance with international health coverage for comprehensive protection.

💰

End-of-year bonus

Contract completion bonus of RMB 5,000–15,000 ($685–$2,055) paid at the end of a successfully completed 12-month contract. This is separate from the flight reimbursement. Some schools also pay a Chinese New Year bonus (年终奖, nián zhōng jiǎng) at the lunar new year. Combined flight + completion bonus adds RMB 13,000–35,000 to annual income — approximately $1,780–$4,795 additional to salary.

🌍

Mandarin lessons

Many schools offer free or subsidised Mandarin language lessons as part of the teacher package. This has genuine financial value (private Mandarin tuition costs RMB 100–300/hour) and obvious cultural value. Even 2 hours/week of free Mandarin over a 12-month posting provides a meaningful foundation in one of the world’s most sought-after language skills.

📅

Paid holidays

China’s school calendar provides generous paid holidays: Chinese New Year (2–4 weeks), summer (6–8 weeks for public schools and universities), national holidays. Language centre holidays are less generous. International school contracts include full holiday pay matching the school calendar. The paid holiday structure is one of China’s most underappreciated benefits when compared to other TEFL markets.

Day to day

Cost of living in China

China’s great financial secret: local food and transport are extraordinarily affordable. The teacher who eats local food (baozi, noodles, dumplings, canteen meals) and uses public transport lives very comfortably on RMB 2,000–4,000/month in most cities. The teacher who eats at Western restaurants and orders imported groceries can spend their entire salary on lifestyle. The difference is choosing local vs expat consumption patterns.

Shanghai monthly (local lifestyle)

Food (local restaurants + canteen)RMB 1,500–2,500
Transport (metro + Didi)RMB 300–600
Social + activitiesRMB 500–1,500

Questions

Salary FAQ

Are Chinese salaries paid reliably?

At reputable, registered schools: yes, reliably and on time. The Z visa process provides a degree of employer quality assurance — schools that sponsor Z visas must be properly registered, which provides some accountability. The main risk of payment issues is with unregistered or poorly-run schools — which are also the schools that would suggest working on a tourist visa. Using the Z visa requirement as a quality filter — only considering employers who will sponsor a proper Z visa — significantly reduces payment risk. Always verify school reviews through expat teacher communities and platforms before accepting any position.

Do I pay Chinese tax on my teaching income?

Yes. China has a progressive income tax. For foreign teachers earning less than RMB 20,000/month, effective tax rates are low (typically 3–10%). Above RMB 20,000, rates increase. Most language centre positions at RMB 8,000–15,000 pay minimal tax. International school contracts often include tax-equalisation clauses or gross-up agreements. Foreign teachers may also be eligible for the special foreigner tax treatment that China offers — allowing deduction of housing allowances and some other benefits. Salary figures quoted in this guide are typically gross — verify net take-home with your specific employer and understand your tax obligations before arrival.
