Requirements to Teach English in Chile

Chile’s requirements sit between Argentina’s casual accessibility and Colombia’s formal M-visa structure. TEFL plus degree is the effective standard for established schools. Chilean Spanish is challenging — but not required for classroom teaching.

The landscape

Chile’s requirements: formally structured, professionally oriented

Chile’s TEFL hiring culture is more formally structured than Argentina’s but less credential-focused than the UAE’s. Major language institutes (the Chileno-Británico and Chileno-Norteamericano chains) have specific published requirements and consistent hiring standards. The visa sujeta a contrato framework means that employers who sponsor visas have a legal stake in hiring qualified, reliable teachers — which creates a more professional environment than markets where tourist-visa work is the norm.

The practical effect: TEFL certificate plus degree is the effective standard for established language institute positions in Santiago. Teachers without degrees will find their access significantly more limited than in Argentina but still possible at smaller independent schools. The Chilean market consistently rewards teachers who invest in quality qualifications — CELTA holders access better positions than 120hr-online-certificate holders, and Level 5 TEFL diploma holders increasingly access the international school and top-tier private school salary tier.

TEFL qualification

TEFL requirements in Chile

📚

120hr TEFL

Market floor for independent institutes and English Opens Doors. Many mid-tier schools accept this as the primary qualification. Essential starting point.

🏆

CELTA

Strongly recommended for Instituto Chileno-Británico, Chileno-Norteamericano, Grant’s English, and Wall Street English. In-country CELTA available at Bridge Abroad Santiago and IH Santiago. Commands higher rates and accesses the most reputable schools.

📋

Level 5 / PGCE

Increasingly specified at international schools (Nido de Águilas, Santiago College). Opens the $1,700–$2,850 salary tier. Teaching licence required for international and private bilingual schools.

🏫

CELTA in Santiago: Bridge Abroad and International House Santiago offer CELTA certification in Chile. Completing CELTA in Santiago simultaneously achieves certification and initial market establishment — practice teaching during the CELTA generates experience and local references. The Bridge Abroad’s IDELT course is an alternative if CELTA dates don’t align. Santiago’s CELTA centres are well-regarded and practical preparation for teaching in the Chilean market specifically.

Academic

Degree requirements

Bachelor’s degree is required at established language institutes and all private and international schools. Chile is more consistently degree-demanding than Argentina (where personality can sometimes compensate) but equivalent to Colombia and Brazil’s major chains in its expectations. The Chileno-Norteamericano specifically requires a teaching-related degree. The Chileno-Británico requires degree in English or Modern Languages.

Teachers without degrees will find options primarily at smaller independent institutes in Santiago and at regional schools in cities like Concepción and Valparaíso where competition is lower. The English Opens Doors government programme is the most accessible path for teachers without degrees — it has no degree requirement and provides structured entry to the Chilean education system.

The language

Chilean Spanish: the most challenging in Latin America

Chilean Spanish is consistently rated by Spanish learners as the hardest variety to understand on the continent — and the reputation is earned. Key features:

  • Speed: Chileans speak rapidly, even by Latin American standards
  • Contraction: Words and sounds are heavily contracted — “para allá” becomes “p’allá”; word-final “s” is often aspirated or dropped entirely
  • “Po”: Added to ends of phrases for emphasis — “sípo” = “yes (obviously)”; “nopo” = “no (obviously)”
  • “Cachái?”: Ubiquitous question — “understand?” / “you see?”
  • “Altiro”: “Right away” / “immediately”
  • “Al tiro” / “al lote” / “cachai” / “weón” (friendly address): Core Chilean slang

The good news: Chileans are aware their Spanish is unusual and are generally patient with foreign learners making the effort. Once attuned — typically after 1–2 months of immersion — Chilean Spanish becomes comprehensible and even enjoyable. Teachers with Latin American Spanish experience from other countries describe Chilean Spanish as requiring 3–4 weeks of focused recalibration rather than a complete restart.

For bilingual school and private school positions: basic functional Spanish is expected for parent communication and staff interaction. For language institute positions: not required for classroom teaching — lessons are conducted in English. For daily life: essential for navigating supermarkets, transport, healthcare, and anything outside the immediate expat bubble.

Questions

Requirements FAQ

Does Chile accept non-native English speakers?

Yes — Chile accepts non-native speakers with near-native proficiency and strong TEFL qualifications. The TEFL Org specifically notes that non-native English speakers will typically need a TOEFL or IELTS certificate to demonstrate proficiency. C2-level proficiency (IELTS 8.0+ or TOEFL 110+) is effectively the bar. The established institutes (Chileno-Británico, Chileno-Norteamericano) have a preference for native speakers from traditional English-speaking countries but are not exclusively restrictive. Teachers from Western Europe with near-native English and strong credentials do find positions, particularly in institutes with a more progressive hiring approach.

Is Chile a good first TEFL posting for new teachers?

More demanding for entry than Argentina, Guatemala, or Peru — but accessible with the right preparation. The most accessible entry route for new teachers in Chile is the English Opens Doors programme (no degree, no experience required) or smaller independent institutes. Teachers who arrive with CELTA certification and a degree, even with limited experience, can typically find language institute positions during the peak March hiring window. The more structured Chilean market means the first 1–2 weeks’ job search requires more organised effort than Argentina’s casual walk-in culture, but the resulting employment situation is more professionally stable and legally secure.
