One week of orientation — cultural trips, teacher workshops, a half-day of teaching practice — then straight into your paid placement.

In-Person TEFL + Placement Not TEFL-certified yet? Start here.

Four weeks in Thailand: a culture and language week, then a 120-hour teacher-training course with two days of real teaching practice — then your placement.

03A word from Mike
Mike Maitland, TEFL Heaven founder
A word from our founder

"I went to Thailand chasing a girl."

She said yes. That's how TEFL Heaven started — not with a business plan, but with a Scotsman inviting himself on a girl's flight to Bangkok.

Thailand is where all of this began for me. Seventeen years later we've sent more than 3,000 teachers abroad, and it's still a family business.

13You won’t do this alone
Why people choose this

You arrive with friends already made.

  • You go as a group — you train together, explore together, and walk into week one already knowing people
  • Proper in-person training — real classrooms and real students before your first paid lesson, with trainers who taught here themselves
  • Support the whole way — a team that answers before you fly, while you train, and long after you’re placed

Most people sign up alone. Nobody finishes alone — the group you train with becomes your first circle of friends in the country.

14Money to bring
Read this before you book

Bring enough to reach your first paycheck.

$1,400to bring with you

It covers rent and living from landing until your first pay lands. Landlords usually want the first month plus one to two months' deposit — rent runs $150–$300 a month.

  • August and February intakes— bring a little more for the long break
  • Not spent on us— it's your own float, in your own pocket

We're telling you this early on purpose. If that number isn't realistic right now, you should know today — not after you've paid.

15Can you apply?
Can you apply?

The checklist.

  • Aged 21 – 55— 56–59 case by case
  • A Bachelor's degree— any subject
  • A 120-hour TEFL / TESOL / CELTA— accredited, already in hand
  • Citizen of USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, NZ or South Africa
  • Non-native speakers— C1 English with a short intro video — open to non-native speakers from Central or South America, Europe, Russia or Turkey.
  • Clean background check— minor offences case by case
  • Health check— needed for your work permit

Tattoos: small visible ones may be fine — tell us at signup. Never visible tattoos of Buddha — this matters greatly in Thailand. Pets: possible but honestly discouraged — every cost and complication is yours, and they can limit where you can be placed.

17The honest bit
The honest bit

Nobody says it's a holiday.

  • It's a real 40-hour week— 17–25 of it in front of a class
  • Classes are big— 25 to 35 kids, sometimes co-taught
  • You commit to the semester— schools plan around you
  • Sign up 3 months ahead— 4–5 is better; 45 days is the shortest we can do
  • Change your intake free— with 35+ days' notice
  • The heat is real— and so is the everyday magic

Teachers who thrive here treat it like a job in an amazing country — not a gap year with homework.

18What our Thailand teachers say
From our Thailand alumni

Reviews — in their words. ★★★★★

"I loved that it provided a community of future teachers and friends. I also loved that the trainers had experience teaching in Thailand and could answer the many questions that we asked."

Siobhan Wetzel — Thailand

"I felt incredibly prepared for the job I was placed in. I had prepared lesson plans from the training experience that helped kick start my lesson planning for the school in a way that no other teachers placed in my school found."

John Grogan — Thailand

"This meant I had absolutely no hassle, as soon as I finished my course my agency got in touch with me, I moved to my new town and started my new job a week later- it was incredibly easy."

Katie Russel — Thailand
