02Five ways into Korea
Before you read on

Korea has five programs.

You're reading this oneEducation Assistant Program No degree? Start here.

Help kids practice English at a private school — Working Holiday Visa, from age 20, a high school diploma is enough.

In-Person TEFL + Placement Train in Korea, then teach.

For degree-holders: a 120-hour TEFL course in Korea, then a guaranteed teaching job with a free apartment.

Placement Program Already TEFL-certified? Straight in.

For degree-holders with a TEFL: a weekend orientation, then straight into a paid teaching job.

English Companion Program Conversation, not classrooms.

Live with a Korean host family and help them practice everyday English.

There's also a 6-Month Placement for TEFL-certified degree-holders. Not sure which fits? Ask us at your interview.

03A word from Mike
Mike Maitland, TEFL Heaven founder
A word from our founder

"Feel the fear and do it anyway."

TEFL Heaven started when I invited myself on a girl's flight to Bangkok. She said yes — and seventeen years later we've sent more than 3,000 people abroad, and it's still a family business.

This program is the one I point people to when they say "I'd love Korea, but I don't have a degree." Now you don't need one.

Every other route into Korea asks for a Bachelor's degree. This one asks for a high school diploma. The Working Holiday Visa opens the door from age 20 — you earn $850–$1,000 a month helping kids practice English, and your weekends belong to Korea.

06Your job
Your job

Not classroom teaching. Something easier.

What you actually doHelp kids practice English

1-on-1 tutoring, English conversation, help in informal settings, class prep and a little social media — with kids aged 4 to 16 at a private Hagwon school. You never run a class alone.

The hours25 hours a week, afternoons

Monday–Friday, usually 12:00–17:00 or 13:00–18:00. 25 hours a week is the visa's maximum (Canadians have no limit). Weekends and public holidays off, plus 1 paid day off a month from month two.

Placements are anywhere in Korea — usually around Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Ulsan, Daejeon, Sejong and Gwangju. Contracts run 6 months and are renewable.

10Money to bring
Read this before you book

Bring enough to reach your first paycheck.

$3,500–4,500to bring with you

It covers your first weeks — food, transport, your long-term housing deposit and rent — until your first salary lands. Housing deposits in Korea run $2,000–$3,500 and are refunded when you leave, so most of this money stays yours; you don't spend it, it just needs to exist.

We're telling you this early on purpose. If that number isn't realistic right now, you should know today — not after you've paid.

12Can you apply?
Can you apply?

No degree. But the visa has rules.

  • Aged 20 – 30— Canada & UK to 35; Argentina, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Portugal & Taiwan to 34; Japan to 25
  • A high school diploma— that's the education bar, no degree needed
  • A passport from one of 25 eligible countries— including USA, UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands
  • Fluent English— a TEFL/TESOL is not required, though it helps
  • US applicants— must be in college or within 1 year of graduating, with proof
  • Clean police check— and no partners, kids or pets on this program

Small visible tattoos may be fine — tell us at signup, case by case. Religious dress isn't allowed on this program. Some passports (UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, Netherlands, Italy) need a doctor's certificate for the visa.

15The honest bit
The honest bit

The door is open wider — and the pay is smaller.

  • This is not a teacher's salary. $850–$1,000 a month funds life in Korea with $100–$300 left over — our teaching programs pay roughly double, but they need a degree.
  • The housing deposit is real money. $2,000–$3,500 up front, refunded when you leave — it's why we say bring $3,500–$4,500.
  • The health rules still apply. More relaxed than our teaching routes, but epilepsy, TB, HIV and severe asthma can still stop the visa.
  • Book about 3 months ahead — 90 days out is the shortest we can do.
  • Change of plans? Your date moves free with 35+ days’ notice — inside 35 days a $250 change fee applies. All payments for the program are non-refundable.

We'd rather you knew all of this today than at the airport.

You are never alone after the TEFL course, you are always welcome to go back and visit your trainers if you need help or ideas with your lessons.
