03A word from Mike
Mike Maitland, TEFL Heaven founder
A word from our founder

"Feel the fear and do it anyway."

TEFL Heaven started when I invited myself on a girl's flight to Bangkok. She said yes — and seventeen years later we've sent more than 3,000 teachers abroad, and it's still a family business.

Cambodia is the one people pick when the degree box is the problem: a high school diploma is enough here, and the job is still guaranteed.

$800–$1,500 a month with just a high school diploma — up to $1,600 with a degree — and $300–$500 of it saved. Weekends at Angkor Wat, riverside Phnom Penh, and a coastline most tourists never reach.

Kids, classrooms, and more than English.

Who you teachKids aged 4 – 18, mostly little ones

Kindergarten and primary make up most placements. Classes of 15–25, in private and international schools.

The week40 – 45 hours, 20 – 30 teaching

Two days off a week (they may not be back-to-back). All public holidays off; some schools run Saturday classes.

Be open to teaching more than just English — many schools want several subjects taught in English. Placements run across Cambodia — Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang, Krong Poi Pet and Serei Saophoan. Right now the capital has fewer openings than usual, so the more open you are on location, the faster you’re placed. Contracts run 12 months and are renewable — and some schools refund your work-permit costs when you finish one.

12You won’t do this alone
Why people choose this

You arrive with friends already made.

  • You go as a group — you train together, explore together, and walk into week one already knowing people
  • Proper in-person training — real classrooms and real students before your first paid lesson, with trainers who taught here themselves
  • Support the whole way — a team that answers before you fly, while you train, and long after you’re placed

Most people sign up alone. Nobody finishes alone — the group you train with becomes your first circle of friends in the country.

13Money to bring
Read this before you book

Bring enough to reach your first paycheck.

$1,990to bring with you
$700of it in cash, for immigration

It covers you through the course weeks and until your first paycheck lands. Immigration also asks to see $700 in cash as proof of funds when you arrive — you don't spend it, it stays yours.

We're telling you this early on purpose. If that number isn't realistic right now, you should know today — not after you've paid.

14Can you apply?
Can you apply?

No degree. But there are rules.

  • Aged 21 – 40— 41 to 59 considered case by case
  • A high school diploma— that's it, no degree needed
  • A 120-hour TESOL certificate— you’ll earn it in your first four weeks
  • A citizen of the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand— EU passport holders can apply with C1 English and an intro video
  • Clean police check— minor offences case by case
  • No partners, kids or pets— this program doesn't allow them

Small visible tattoos may be fine — tell us at signup. Religious dress isn't allowed on this program, and a health check is needed for the work permit.

16The honest bit
The honest bit

Easy entry rules — real job, real rules.

  • The health rules are strict. Speech impediments, autism, legal blindness or deafness, dyslexia, chronic dizziness, HIV and schizophrenia usually stop the work permit. Bipolar, epilepsy, depression, cancer or anxiety — talk to us first, a doctor's note may be needed.
  • It's a real 40 – 45-hour week — 20 – 30 of it teaching, your 2 days off may not be back-to-back, and some schools run Saturday classes.
  • You'll likely teach more than English — kindergarten and primary, often several subjects.
  • The lifetime placement guarantee is for degree holders only. It covers South Korea, Thailand, Japan, Myanmar and Vietnam — as long as you’re eligible for that program.
  • Long-term housing is on you — $200 – $400 a month, usually first month plus a one-month deposit. We help you find it.
  • Sign up 3 months ahead — 4 – 5 is better. Dates can move with 35+ days’ notice — all payments are non-refundable.

We'd rather you knew all of this today than at the airport.

17What our Cambodia teachers say
From our Cambodia alumni

Reviews — in their words. ★★★★★

"I loved my instructor, he was knowledgeable, funny, and really supportive. He helped make sure I felt prepared before my first lesson and for everything following. I adored my TEFL coordinator (we are still close friends!) She made the adjustment to Cambodia smooth."

Lily — Cambodia

"It was comprehensive and professional and required of me to give my best, but I also felt appreciated for who I am with my unique abilities and talents and challenges. The trainer had an amazing way of teaching and relating to us and made me feel really relaxed whenever I took myself too seriously!"

Claire — Cambodia

"I arrived in Phnom Penh knowing nobody. Three months later I had a school I loved, an apartment I was proud of, and more friends than I'd had in years. The expat community there is something special."

Emma L. — Phnom Penh

20Common questions
Questions we get every week

The short answers.

Do I really not need a degree?

Really. A high school diploma is enough — degree holders just earn a little more and get the lifetime placement guarantee.

Do I need a TEFL already?

No — the 120-hour in-class TESOL course is the first four weeks of this program.

When do I pay?

$2,097 total: $695 books it, the remaining $1,402 is due 90 days before your intake.

Where will I live?

Course housing in Thailand, then orientation housing in Cambodia. After placement you rent — $200 – $400 a month, and we help you find it.

Where will I teach?

Mostly Phnom Penh — also Siem Reap, Battambang and beyond. Kids aged 4 – 18, often more than one subject.

What if my plans change?

Change of plans? Your date moves free with 35+ days’ notice — inside 35 days a $250 change fee applies. All payments for the program are non-refundable.
